| What
is Felt ? |
|
Nepali
felt is made by hand
with sheep’s wool.
Making felt is a traditional
Nepali art of making
woolen mats in the Himalayan
region to insulate shelters
from extreme cold. The
traditional felt mats
are locally known as
“Radi.”
Felt is a fabric made
of wool fibers matted
together by steam and
pressure - no spinning,
weaving or knitting
is involved. The fibers
uses in this process
include wool, fur and
certain hair fibers
that mat together under
appropriate conditions
due to their peculiar
structure and high degree
of crimp (waviness ).
This material is widely
used in the hat industry.
It is also used to make
such items as slippers
and in certain unique
situations, fabric garments. |
