Thanka painting in Nepal began in 11th
century A.D. when Buddhists and Hindus
began to make illustrations of their
dueties.Historically,Tibetan and Chinese
influence in Nepalese paintings is quite
evident in Thankas.
There are of two types of Thankas. The
first are illustrative paintings of
deities, and the second are Mandalas. The
Mandalas are mystic diagram paintings
of complex patterns of circles and squares,
each having specific significance. They
are painted on silk or cotton fabrics
using brilliant colors of many hues.
